Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback, also known as EEG (electroencephalogram) biofeedback, is a brain training method that detects brainwaves through electrodes placed on the scalp, and provides immediate feedback from a computer-based program. The system then uses a visual or sound cue to help retrain the brainwaves. Neurofeedback is completed in our clinic using evidence-based 3D games, movies, and sounds. By repeatedly engaging in the training process, patients learn to regulate and alleviate different symptoms.

Who could benefit from neurofeedback treatment?

Neurofeedback may be used as a stand-alone treatment or as an adjunct to other therapies. It may help children, adolescents, and adults. Different degrees of scientific evidence suggest benefits for patients struggling with aspects of Autism and/or ADHD (e.g., emotional and behavioral dysregulation), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs), Anxiety, Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), stress-related symptoms, insomnia and other sleep disturbances, and symptoms caused by age-related cognitive decline.

Psychopharmacology

What should I expect during a neurofeedback session? Neurofeedback therapy typically consists of once-a-week sessions, for an average of 20-25 weeks. Some people may need fewer sessions, while others may require more. While the participant is sitting in a chair, the technician attaches painless (EEG) sensors to the patient’s scalp. To make this process easier we use a cap (like a swim cap) that has prewired sensors. The wires will be attached to a computer that will process the signals and provide information about various brainwave frequencies. While using a 3D video game, the participant will receive feedback signals from the program. The game will then begin directing the participant’s brainwave activity toward more desirable and controlled patterns. The participant will receive immediate feedback from the program as brainwave patterns improve. Between sessions, the participant should be able to notice changes in stress, sleep patterns, and/or mental clarity.

Will neurofeedback cure my difficulties?

Neurofeedback is not considered a cure, but rather a training method to learn how to manage or regulate brain function. This is achieved by repeated training sessions using the neurofeedback system to reorganize and regulate brainwave frequencies. The first step in neurofeedback is to assess brain functioning, and to provide information about areas of dysfunction that may be associated with the symptoms that need treatment. Then we calibrate the games and activities to individualize treatment for achieving desired functioning.
